The Forth Will Be With Uth. Alwayth.

5 May

Happy belated Star Wars day! May the Forth is Star Warth Day, ath everyone knowth.

Unfortunately life has ramped up, and I didn’t have time this week to write up my piece on stop-motion animation. I will go ahead and disappoint you ahead of time by saying I won’t have time next week either, OR the week after. Although I will try to get something done, I can’t promise anything and it makes me sad. Work basically exploded, so it’s keeping me mega-busy with no time to blog. It sucks, but hey, it’s a new opportunity to learn some neat new stuff. So, a mixed bag!

In the meantime, please enjoy reading about two new species of Tarsier that were discovered. If you don’t know what a Tarsier is, here is a helpful video.

Have a great couple of weeks! Look after yourself!

Sci-Fi Short – Real Artists

24 Feb

Screenshot from the ‘Real Artists’ site

Sometimes I try to help new or independent filmmakers reach a wider audience. I do this of my own choosing and without receiving or expecting any payments or favors in return. I do not do this for everyone, but feel free to ask!

Recently my good friend Achariya put me in touch with filmmaker Cameo Wood about reviewing the sci-fi short Real Artists. I’ll be honest, a science fiction short starring a black woman and an Asian woman, written and directed by a woman, based upon a Ken Liu short story, about a filmmaker who gets her dream job?  Take me there!

With that mix of components, it would have been easy for me to just rubber-stamp the movie as ‘Great! This checks all my boxes and you should give the filmmakers money!’ and move on – but I wanted to be sure I gave it a proper, objective look.

In Which I Find I Really AM A Vampire

3 Mar

Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder!* It’s totally a thing!

I walked out of work last night at 4:02 PM into a Florida late-winter evening, which means a temperature of 80 degrees F, and so bright your eyeballs fry down to little hard marbles inside your head.

For as long as I can remember I have felt this way – That first blast of light and heat makes me close my eyes, and my first instinct is to literally lay down wherever I am and go to sleep. It’s a strange response, and I didn’t really think about it much until last night. Maybe it’s going from the darkened office environment to the bright outdoors, and my melatonin, seratonin, or dopamine levels are thrown off so something suddenly goes into overdrive and manufactures more of something else. That’s why I drop like a Battle Droid without a Command Ship.

“Does Not Compzzzzz”

Admittedly, it’s been a tiring week – I’m still investigating why the police were in my neighborhood Sunday night. I’m not some curtain-twitcher on a crusade to make young men pull up their pants; rather, I’m only concerned if there is reason to believe that my house or someone else’s might be struck by a hail of bullets or the flying wreckage of an exploding meth lab. These are valid concerns, given my neighborhood history.

Still working on some upcoming posts, though! Check back next week for posts about my violin and I, and comparing Don Bluth’s classic An American Tale with the bloody, violent BBC America show Copper.

Stay tuned, and have a great week!

“Just Say Yes And We’ll Move On.”

26 Jan

So I was reading about the Twitter beef between rapper/flat-earther B.o.B. and Neil DeGrasse Tyson* on I09. Down in the comments I ran across a reminder that this exists:

This is one of my FAVORITE Will Ferrell characters. And look at vintage Jeff Goldblum, trying to hold it together! MAGIC.

Since it nearly made me spray coffee all over my monitor, I thought it would be a good mood-lightener since things have been rather low around here lately. So watch it and enjoy – and I hope the rest of your day is awesome!

*Not a phrase I ever anticipated using but I LOVE THAT THIS IS HAPPENING!
