While My Face Gently Leaks…

21 Apr

Still buried under personal projects, I am also sick this week. Yay me. In lieu of real content, please have:

  • This beautiful song from Kubo and the Two Strings, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Written by George Harrison, there are many versions of this song, including one with Tom Petty and Prince, but this one includes the shamisen and other Japanese instruments.

Some Texts From Superheroes. These ALWAYS make me laugh and are a great way to lose an afternoon. If you have even a passing knowledge of the Marvel and DC movies, you’ll be able to keep up.

Check back next week for A Stop-Motion Celebration! Have a great weekend!

Happy Friday! Here’s the Luke Cage Trailer

Read the Words To find Out the Stuff the Words Tell You Stuff About.

I love how Marvel/Netflix keeps consistently topping themselves, and tell such multivaried stories.

The Avengers save the universe. We wanted to tell stories about characters who save the streets. – Jeph Loeb

That’s all I got for today. Still writing that Eddie Murphy post, when I’m not working on my novel or writing smut about Frankenstein’s monster, like all normal people do. Also I am re-reading Shelley’s Frankenstein – it’s SO much better than I remember!

What are YOU up to today? Got any weekend plans?

In Theaters Now: Captain America – Civil War

6 May

Hi Bucky! *waves*

I loved this new installment of Captain America, but I’m not in love with it, if that makes sense. It had some big shoes to fill after the masterpiece that was Winter Soldier,  but it was still a solid, great entry to the MCU.

Out of five stars, I’d say 4.

Head behind the cut for more detailed thoughts, but be warned!

Quick Check-In:

  • I’m seeing the Animated Shorts collection tonight at the Enzian. Shorts are ALWAYS a wonderful grab bag, ranging from ‘meh’ to ‘GOOD LORD’ so I am really looking forward to that.
  • Last night I watched a real treat-  Hush. It’s by the same writer/director as Oculus, which I reviewed in a bit a few months ago and while that had some nice things going on for it, ultimately I didn’t care for it. Hush is a completely different animal – this might be my new favorite horror movie! I want to do a whole review on it but I’ll just let you know the premise: a deaf female horror writer has moved to an isolated cabin. Her idyllic routine is upset when a sadist appears and begins a sick game of cat-and-mouse. The tension is so thick and tight that it had me in knots! Well-acted, brilliant use of space, lighting, and pacing, and a lead actress who is intensely charismatic while never saying a word. It could have been incredibly stupid and exploitative but instead it’s just masterful. If you’re a fan of horror thrillers YOU WILL BE PLEASED.
  • The Doctor Strange trailer has dropped and it’s SO THRILLING!

I really, really can’t wait. I love the Marvel films in general but this one looks ESPECIALLY up my alley! I love occult stuff. I’m aware of the controversy of the film containing a lot of Asian mysticism while being mysteriously bereft of Asian people and that makes me sad, but I feel like that is a bigger conversation for another day*. Still, it looks AWESOME. I love Doctor Orpheus from the Venture Bros., who acts as a parody of Doctor Strange, but I can’t wait to see the real thing in action. Also Benedict Cumberbatch’s fruity magic bathrobe is magnificent and I can’t wait to see him waving his hands around shouting things. His costume is beautiful and I want one. Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, huge galactic imagery, cities turned upside down – they need to stop reading my diary.

That’s all I’ve got for today. I’m taking notes on everything I see through the Florida Film Festival and will publish a big post about it next week.

Have a great day!

Five Hangover Cures for New Year’s Day

31 Dec

Many people will make a New Year’s resolution and get up early on New Year’s Day, energized by their resolve and the promise of a new year, and GET ON whatever they’ve chosen to change. Yardwork will be done, closets organized, gym memberships researched and healthy eating embraced. I will do this, because I am one of these people, although I try not to be obnoxious about it.

HOWEVER, many New Year’s Days are lost to the crushing misery of a New Year’s Day Hangover. Today’s post is intended for everyone who will party hard tonight, wake up late tomorrow, and then move as little as possible for many hours as our livers work patiently to save us from ourselves. I do include myself in that group since anything is possible when I have wine in the house.

Anyhoodle, here are five multi-hour things to watch on Netflix. All share these characteristics:

  • There are few-to-no explosions
  • They are not loud or bright
  • They are somewhat easy to understand, and if you can’t follow along, pleasant to listen to and stare at for several hours
